Yellow Jackets, Bumble Bees, Carpenter Bees, Hornets, Mud Daubers, Ground Hornets, and Bald face hornets are generally what you may have when you experience this problem in or around your home or business. On occasion you might encounter a Honey Bee nest or cluster that is referred to as a swarm. If you discover a swarm of Honey Bees, it would be in your best interest to call a beekeeper. Generally you can reach one through your county extension service in your area, however if that is not possible, most pest control companies have a list of people who will come out and retrieve the honey bees.

Most of the time these bee swarms are not dangerous to be around, however if the swarm is close to an area where people frequent, and you cannot successfully get a beekeeper out, then it is generally ok for a pest control company to come out and destroy them. You should first check to see if it is legal to destroy them in your area.
The pest control company will know if

it is all right. Usually the swarms are merely a resting place where the queen bee has decided to stop and take a break from flight. This break may be an hour or over night. The worker bees will cling together around the queen to protect her from any harm. Do not try to approach the swarm as the worker bees may look at you as a threat to their queen and attack you.

The best way to treat for the other kinds of bees, or wasps is to treat the nest directly. Due to the complexity of the various kinds to treat, I strongly recommend a protective bee suit be worn as once you start the bees or wasps will be angered, and can become uncontrollably dangerous. If you cannot get protective clothes then I suggest leaving the problem up to a pest control company that has the proper training and equipment.
